The way that an air conditioning system works largely depends on the type of unit that is installed. Homes with outdoor AC units and indoor ductwork works by compressing a chemical known as refrigerant. The compressor is a machine inside of the unit that heats the refrigerant chemical until it is a hot gas. Afterward, the gas moves to another area inside the AC system, known as a condenser coil, and the hot air is released outside. 

Air from inside the home is drawn into a return duct where it passes over an evaporator coil. The refrigerant chemical that is inside the coil removes any heat; making the air cool. It is then pushed indoors and dispersed throughout the ductwork and air handlers in the home. Meanwhile, ductless mini-split HVAC systems rely on refrigerant lines instead of ductwork to distribute cool air to indoor units.
