Carbon Footprint

What is a carbon footprint?

By Anne Fonda

A simple carbon footprint definition is this: It’s the amount of carbon dioxide, methane, and greenhouse gases created by your daily activities. A company, organization, product, or entire industry can also have a carbon footprint.

One of the largest contributors to carbon emissions and greenhouse gas emissions in the United States is burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation.

How to determine your carbon footprint

Our friends at The Nature Conservancy have developed a carbon footprint calculator to help you get a quick estimate of your yearly carbon emissions.

It asks several questions, including:

  • Your zip code/state/city/country
  • How many people live in your home
  • The size of your home
  • How you heat your home
  • Annual household income
  • How many miles you commute or travel
  • Your diet
  • And more

You may know that Trane Residential HVAC is part of a larger multi-national corporation, Trane Technologies. Trane Technologies is committed to a sustainable future and helping our customers reduce their carbon emissions, and thus the size of their carbon footprints.

This goes across the spectrum of commercial HVAC, residential HVAC, transit refrigeration, and more. Through the Gigaton Challenge, we have made a bold commitment to reduce one billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 e) from our customers’ carbon footprints by 2030.

That commitment is one of several reasons that TIME magazine named Trane Technologies one of the world’s most sustainable companies.

What it means for you

For you as a homeowner, our commitment means you can count on us to accelerate the use of high-efficiency HVAC equipment use more sustainable refrigerants, with an entire system-level approach to homes, utilizing climate management products like smart thermostats to further enhance energy efficiency, expand electrification, and reduce costs.

According to the Department of Energy (DOE), on average, your HVAC system accounts for nearly half of your home’s total energy usage. So buying a more efficient system and opting for an all-electric HVAC system when it’s time for HVAC replacement makes financial sense and sense for the planet.
