HVAC Diffuser

An HVAC diffuser, also known as a supply diffuser or air diffuser, is an HVAC accessory that helps to distribute heated or cooled air evenly in a room. They are similar to HVAC registers in that they connect to the air supply from your ductwork.

However, unlike basic registers that blow air in only one direction, (up, down, or out) supply air diffusers can direct airflow in multiple directions at one time. Diffusing the air allows for even distribution and can lead to increased comfort.

You may have seen ceiling-mounted HVAC diffusers in the ceilings of commercial spaces. They are usually square or round and help spread conditioned air throughout a room, rather than blasting air down in one small area.

Some supply air diffusers feature vents that create smooth airflow that travels along walls and ceilings before mixing with the interior air. Other diffusers use a series of small openings to diffuse and mix the heated or cooled air into the interior space.

They are available for home use as well – big box stores and Amazon sell them. Baseboard diffusers are more common for home use and are installed just like a register.

Benefits of HVAC air diffusers

In addition to distributing conditioned air more evenly, HVAC diffusers have several other benefits, including:

  • Increased comfort
  • Can help improve air circulation
  • May help reduce energy costs
  • Can help reduce noise levels when the HVAC system is running at 100%
