Do Mini-Splits Have Filters, and How Do I Care for Them?

Yes, mini-splits have filters. If you have a single-zone or multi-zone ductless mini-split system, you know how great they are for heating and cooling your home, giving you full control of the temperature in each room or zone. To keep your system functioning at peak performance, you must care for the filters properly.

Similar to a window AC unit or wall unit, mini-split AC units and ductless mini-split heating and cooling indoor units have reusable and washable filters. With careful handling, Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split filters are made to last up to 10 years. Should you need a mini-split air filter replacement, contact your ductless system installer.

Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split air filters vary based on the indoor unit - they may have multiple filters.  Some options include:

  • Standard air filter
  • Nano platinum filter
  • Electrostatic anti-allergy enzyme filter
  • High-efficiency filter
  • Air-purifying filter
  • Long-life filter - available in ceiling-mount mini-splits - these cassette mini-splits may also have a filter check signal

Refer to your owner's manual for additional details.

How often should I clean my mini-split filters?

How often mini-splits need to be cleaned will depend on the unit. You should perform Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split filter cleaning according to your owner’s manual. That can be as often as every two weeks during peak heating or cooling season. You may be OK with cleaning the filter once a month during less frequent usage. Refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions for your system.

You can dust or wipe down the exterior of your indoor units as part of your regular cleaning schedule. Keep the outdoor unit clear of debris or snow, and keep shrubs and plants trimmed at least two feet away from the unit.

How to clean a Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split filter

If you have a Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split, here is how to clean the air filters. Remember, not all units are the same, so check your owner’s manual for directions as well. They may differ slightly from these.

  1. Turn off the mini-split at the wall control or with the remote control.
  2. Open the unit by lifting up/pulling down the front panel.
  3. Gently lift the air filters out, being careful not to shake off dust during removal. (Or you’ll need to clean that up later.)
  4. Unclip the smaller filter from the larger one. Set it in a safe place. These smaller filters should not be allowed to get wet.
  5. Vacuum and/or rinse the large air filters. Using a brush attachment and low suction, vacuum the filters. Suction that is too strong can damage the filter.
  6. You can also gently handwash the filters in your sink. Use lukewarm water and the spray attachment on your faucet for best results.
  7. Allow the air filters to thoroughly dry.
  1. Once the filters are completely dry, snap the smaller deodorizing filter back on.
  2. Gently slide the larger air filters back into the mini-split.
  3. Close the panel.
  4. Turn the power to the mini-split back on.

Repeat the process for additional units. For further guidance, refer to your owner’s manual. If you have difficulty, your HVAC company can assist you.

Prevent problems with regular maintenance

Keep up with the mini-split filter cleaning schedule to help prevent problems with your ductless system. Clogged filters can cause

Schedule professional ductless HVAC maintenance at least annually. Twice a year is better if you have a ductless mini-split heating and cooling system. During the maintenance visit, the HVAC technician should:

  • Thoroughly inspect and clean the units
  • Check for refrigerant leaks
  • Check electrical connections
  • Provide mini-split air filter replacement for old or damaged filters
  • And more

Be sure to work with an HVAC company experienced with mini-split units - preferably the company that installed your system. Consider signing up for a service contract so you don’t forget to schedule maintenance.
