Do Mini-Splits Turn Off When Temperature is Reached?
We’ll make this quick. Yes, many mini-split AC units and mini-split heating and cooling systems shut off when they reach the set room temperature. They stay powered on unless you physically turn them off at a wall controller or with the remote control. The mini-split air conditioner or mini-split heat and AC system cycles on and off as needed.
The indoor thermostat or mini-split remote allows you to set your desired temperature, and the mini-split HVAC units have sensors that monitor the room or zone temperature. When the system achieves the set point, the mini-split cassette or wall unit will either turn off completely (traditional on/off units) or operate at reduced capacity to maintain an even temperature (in inverter units).
And remember, with a multi-zone ductless mini-split system, you can have a different set temperature in each zone. All units must be in the same mode, however (heating or cooling.)
Trane/Mitsubishi mini-splits have the energy-efficient advantage of INVERTER heat pump technology. Conventional air conditioners and heating systems operate at full capacity until they reach the set temperature and then stop. They may start up again minutes later as the temperature creeps up or gets chilly.
Each time the outdoor unit starts up, it uses more energy to start than it does during regular operation. The INVERTER, central to our mini-split systems, removes the inefficient cycle of starting and stopping. The variable-speed system is always active with the INVERTER automatically adjusting the heating or cooling when the system temperature sensors detect even subtle changes.
Our mini-split systems heat and cool rooms faster and more effectively. While the system may run longer, it runs at reduced capacity, which saves energy and increases comfort. You can set it and forget it. In addition, the system is so quiet you won’t hear it either.
The INVERTER technology guarantees that the mini-split HVAC system utilizes only the exact amount of energy required to deliver accurate temperature regulation in a single or multi-zone system. This variable-speed inverter mini-split technology can reduce your heating and cooling energy consumption by up to 40% when compared to a conventional HVAC system.
Sound good? Learn if a mini-split system is right for you. Get estimates from experienced mini-split installation companies. Not all HVAC companies have a trained mini-split installer or team on staff.
If you already have a ductless mini-split system but it’s not keeping you comfortable like it once did, we can help. Visit our other troubleshooting pages for specific tips if your mini-split is not cooling or is not working in heat mode. Call for ductless system repair if your mini-split heat pump is acting up or the indoor units are on the fritz.
Practice regular maintenance to keep your mini-split system running efficiently. Clean the mini-split filters regularly to help prevent problems with your ductless HVAC system. Clogged filters can cause
- Poor or no cooling
- Poor or no heating
- Water leakage
- Mold and mildew issues
- Musty smell
- System damage
Schedule professional ductless HVAC maintenance at least once a year. Twice a year is better if you have a ductless mini-split heating and cooling system. During the maintenance visit, the HVAC technician should:
- Thoroughly inspect and clean the units
- Ensure the system operates properly
- Check for refrigerant leaks
- Check electrical connections
- Make minor repairs
- And more
Be sure to work with an HVAC company experienced with mini-split units - preferably the company that installed your system. Consider signing up for a service contract so you don’t forget to schedule maintenance.
