Understanding Your Trane/Mitsubishi Mini-Split Remote

If you just got a Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split heating and cooling system or a mini-split AC unit, you have a Mitsubishi remote for each indoor mini-split HVAC unit. Your mini-split installation team should have shown you how to use the handheld controllers before they left.

If you need a refresher course or you’re having trouble with the remote control, you’re in the right place. Read our guide to understanding your mini-split remote, and what to do if it’s not responding. You can also refer to the operating instructions that came with your ductless mini-split system.

Each remote has a power button to turn the unit on or off, and up/down buttons to adjust the temperature up or down. The more advanced buttons are below the front cover and allow you to control the mode, fan speed, airflow, and more. Watch the video to help explain what some of the other buttons mean and how you can schedule each unit in your mini-split HVAC system.

Why is my mini-split not responding to the remote?

Similar to your TV remote or streaming remote, your mini-split remote must have a line of sight to the mini-split unit you are trying to control. If the mini split AC and heat unit is on but not responding, try raising or lowering the remote or moving it to one side or the other and trying again. You may also want to try moving closer to the unit.

If the unit is still not responding to the remote, you may need to change the batteries. If you have a multi-zone mini-split system, you can try using one of your other remotes. If it works, then you definitely need to replace the batteries in the non-functioning remote.

Simply take off the front lid, take out the old batteries, and replace them with two new AAA batteries, (not rechargeable) being careful to insert in the correct polarity (+/- orientation). Press the RESET button with the tip of a pencil or paperclip. If you don’t hit RESET, the remote may not work.

If the remote still doesn’t work, you may need a replacement. Contact your dealer.

Additional tips: If a remote won’t be used for a long time, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. In addition, avoid dropping or throwing the remote, and don’t let it get wet.

Understanding Mitsubishi mini-split error codes

Your Mitsubishi mini-split system is smart. If there is a problem with the system, it self-diagnoses. It may flash an error code on the remote control screen. You may also notice blinking green lights on the indoor unit. Check your owner’s manual for a list of what the codes mean. In most cases, an error code means you should call your HVAC company for service.

Can Trane/Mitsubishi mini-splits be controlled remotely?

In a word, yes. If you can’t find the Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split remote or you’re away from home and want to adjust the temperature, you can. Simply download the kumo cloud® app to your smartphone.

Once you have downloaded the app, you can control your mini-split system from anywhere, any time. If you have a dual zone mini-split or 3-zone mini-split, you can group zones for more centralized control and manage the system from within the app. Your system can now be controlled by a voice assistant as well, such as Alexa or Google Assistant.

Work with the Trane/Mitsubishi mini-split experts

Keep your ductless mini-split system running at peak performance with regular maintenance. While you can take care of cleaning the mini-split air filters, you’ll want an HVAC professional to inspect, clean, and service your mini-split heat pump and indoor blower units. If possible, work with the dealer who installed your ductless system, especially if it’s under warranty.
