Modern Unitary Heat Pump Applications: A Trane ENL Program Preview

In our latest Trane® Engineers Newsletter LIVE (ENL) program, we will overview various heat pump configurations ranging from traditional systems to advanced dual-fuel heat pumps.

Building a sustainable future

This program will highlight the role of heat pumps in lowering carbon footprints and improving energy efficiency. It will include an overview of heat pump terminology and guidelines for appropriate heat pump sizing according to ASHRAE® climate zones. Additionally, the program will address the selection of auxiliary heating systems and compare CO2 emissions and energy consumption of heat pumps with those of conventional gas/electric and electric/electric rooftop units.

  • Identify various zoned rooftop systems and their application
  • Select and size a unitary heat pump system

Trane ENL is a series of video programs focused on the design and control of HVAC systems, industry issues (sustainability, decarbonization, indoor air quality, acoustics, etc.), or codes and standards. The content is technical and educational, but non-commercial. The target audience is HVAC system design engineers; however, some programs may also be of interest to others in the industry.

Previous programs are available to view on-demand, and free of charge, in the Trane Education Center. In many states, ENL programs meet the requirements for earning Professional Development Hours (PDHs) to help meet the continuing education requirements of your professional engineer license or other certification.

About the Author

Greg DuChane, Applications Engineer

Greg joined Trane in 1989 after earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University. Throughout his 34-year tenure, he’s worked with large, national retail and restaurant chains in various capacities—first as an account executive for Trane National Accounts, then as a regional sales manager for Trane’s global business development group, and recently as Key Accounts Sales Leader. His considerable experience with the application of unitary and dedicated outdoor-air systems, as well as ventilating the commercial kitchens of large restaurant chains, gives him a unique perspective on how such applications affect the HVAC systems in restaurant and retail applications. 

Greg is past Chair of ASHRAE Technical Committee 5.10, Commercial Kitchen Ventilation, and is the current handbook chair. He is also a member of the Restaurant Facilities Managers Association (RFMA) Education Committee, where he has been a frequent speaker at their conferences, and SPECS, where he served on the Advisory Board.
