Trane Advances Building Performance with Updated Modular Self-Contained HVAC Units
Latest innovations in HVAC technology, including modular solutions and advanced controls, deliver precise comfort and control while enhancing building operations
DAVIDSON, N.C., March 25, 2025 – Trane® – by Trane Technologies (NYSE: TT), a global climate innovator, is introducing enhanced Modular Self-Contained (MSC) units to simplify HVAC installation and enhance building performance, minimizing installation disruption and maximizing building productivity. The MSC’s enhanced innovative design streamlines the entire process from delivery to startup.
“Trane's new MSC units are another example of how we are innovating to help current buildings upgrade to the most efficient technology while minimizing the disruption of the retrofit,” said Oakley Roberts, Vice President of Product Management, Commercial HVAC Americas, Trane Technologies. “Designed for rapid assembly, the units can be up and running within a 24-hour period, reducing downtime and improving building productivity. Our new MSC units can improve full load efficiency by up to 30% versus legacy systems.”
The updated Trane Modular Self-Contained (MSC) units simplify HVAC replacements in space-constrained environments. The modular design allows the system to be broken down into smaller, easily transportable sections, overcoming the limitations of traditional installations. The units are now available in capacities from 20 to 80 tons, with new 90–110-ton options available in April 2025.
Beyond simplified installation, the MSC units prioritize occupant comfort and operational efficiency. Variable-speed compressors and direct-drive plenum fans ensure quieter operation. Enhancing this performance is Trane’s new Symbio® 500 unit controller, which offers advanced features like remote connectivity, custom programming, and expanded communication options. These units also utilize low-GWP R-454B refrigerant and include factory-installed leak detection systems.
Further enhancing building comfort and control, Trane has updated the Trane CoolSense® Sensible Cooling (DOAS) Terminal Unit to accommodate higher airflow and capacity requirements. As part of the CoolSense Integrated Outdoor Air Systems, the unit provides precise zone-level temperature and ventilation control offering exceptional efficiency by decoupling cooling and dehumidification. The system is ideal for spaces with specific temperature and humidity requirements, such as commercial office and retail spaces.
Trane’s commitment to holistic building performance extends beyond the MSC units with updates across its broader portfolio, including:
