Watt's in the News? - Volume 17

Here's a great resource from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) that you and your students can use to find out more about energy production and consumption trends in your state. Before you have students reference this site, ask them: "What do you think are the top three energy sources our state produces? What are the top three sources that are consumed?"

State Total Energy Rankings - Which states are the highest/lowest in terms of energy production and consumption per capita? How does your state rank? Any surprises in the list?

You can click on your state to get a more detailed look at energy production and consumption, along with a better understanding of where your electricity comes from: (New York was used as an example below since natural gas use there has been a topic in the news recently.)

There have been a lot of articles published over the past month from a wide variety of sources expressing views on the "gas vs electric stove" debate at the federal level. The use of natural gas, though, goes far beyond just cooking our food. Here is a series of articles that can be shared over the next two months as we take a look at energy transformation and resources that can help identify regional production/consumption data for a variety of energy sources.

All of these resources provide support for the upper level of the BTU Crew: "Module 5 - Energy Usage in Buildings". In addition, they serve as a great introduction to the lessons HS students can learn in NC3 Data Analytics Certification #1 - "Harnessing the Power of Data" and NC3 Data Analytics Certification #2 - "Energy & Sustainability with Data Analytics.”
