Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric Hybrid Variable Refrigerant Flow Line, Expands with Two New Hydronic Indoor Units

Trane Upgrades Popular Rooftop, Split Systems with Innovative Features, Low Global Warming Potential Refrigerants 

DAVIDSON, N.C., Oct. 2, 2024 – Trane – by Trane Technologies (NYSE: TT), a global climate innovator, today introduced the completion of its redesign of the Precedent® Rooftop Unit portfolio, and updates to well-known unitary, split systems and variable air volume products. Two new indoor unit styles have also been added to the Trane® / Mitsubishi Electric HVRF product line, a market-first all-electric variable refrigerant flow (VRF).

Indoor Units, Cassettes, and Wall-mounted Styles Added to Trane / Mitsubishi Electric HVRF Line

Trane has added two families of indoor units to the line of Trane / Mitsubishi Electric HVRF, the only all-electric hybrid VRF unit available on the market. The HVRF system uses a combination of refrigerant to connect outdoor units to the Hybrid Branch Controller (HBC) and water to connect the HBC to indoor units. This unique two-pipe system combines the advantages of VRF and hydronic chillers into an all-electric heat pump that can heat and cool simultaneously while reducing refrigerants in the overall system.

Ceiling cassettes and wall-mounted options have been added to the existing ceiling-concealed indoor units, helping to enhance flexibility and accommodating various space designs and esthetics. The system delivers zoned comfort, helping owners of multi-zone commercial buildings that require individual temperature settings achieve sustainability goals through electrification while complying with ASHRAE® 15 2022 refrigerant requirements.

Contractors working on retrofits or new hotels, dormitories, multi-family complexes, senior living facilities, offices, and hospitals will enjoy the advantages of VRF while helping to manage life cycle costs and system efficiency provided by this system.

The line of Trane / Mitsubishi Electric HVRF indoor units feature:

  • Four-way ceiling-cassette indoor units measuring 22” by 22” range in capacities from 4,000 to 15,000 BTU/H.
  • Four-way ceiling-cassette 33” by 33” indoor units in four ranges from 6,000 to 48,000 BTU/H.
  • Wall-mounted indoor units ranging from 4,000 to 30,000 BTU/H.
  • All indoor units feature a hydronic coil.

Redesign of Precedent® Rooftop Units Completed Offering Consistent Features, Broad Capacities, Added Simplicity

Trane has finished updating the next-generation Precedent portfolio, making it the industry’s most complete and consistent line of light commercial packaged rooftop units. Features and available options are uniform across the entire Precedent portfolio, and all units ship with low-GWP R-454B refrigerant to help small commercial offices, restaurants, schools, warehouses, and government buildings operate more sustainably.

Precedent units come in a full range of capacities from three to 25 tons, efficiency ratings including standard, high, and ultra-high eFlex™, and heating types including gas/electric, electric/electric, heat pump, and hybrid dual fuel.

All Precedent units will now offer:

  • Enhanced system performance, connectivity, and serviceability via the onboard Symbio® 700 unit controller featuring an intuitive onboard interface and app for start-up and servicing capabilities.
  • Reduced carbon emissions with all-electric heat pump and hybrid dual fuel options.
  • Dehumidification and temperature stability with optional modulating hot gas reheat.
  • Quicker and easier installation with a packaged unit that houses components in one cabinet as well as a new modular component design that simplifies service, including a new hinged control panel door, color-coded wiring, keyed connections, no belts to replace, and common components across the product line.

Foundation® Rooftops Transition to Low-GWP Refrigerant, Ship Standard with Symbio 700

Trane Foundation® Rooftop Units are transitioning to low-GWP R-454B. The units will include factory-installed leak detection systems, as required, to provide contractors and engineers peace of mind knowing the rooftops will operate effectively on day one, helping to save time and costs associated with installation in the field. In addition, large Trane Foundation Rooftop Units with 15- to 25-ton capacities will ship standard with Symbio 700 unit controls to improve performance and ease installation.

Foundation units in 7.5- to 12.5-ton capacities will be available with R-454B refrigerant in early 2025.

IntelliCoreTM Large Split Systems Feature Factory-Installed Symbio 800, Low-GWP Refrigerant

Trane has updated its RAUJ models, now branded IntelliCoreTM Large Split Systems, to help building owners reduce operational costs and meet sustainability goals. Whether installed on the ground or in combination with other equipment such as air handlers, chillers, and climate chargers, IntelliCore Large Split Systems can be used in many applications when a rooftop unit is not feasible.

These air-cooled large condensing units have been improved to offer:

  • Factory-installed Symbio 800 controller for enhanced system monitoring, performance, and building connectivity.
  • Low-GWP R-454B refrigerant that meets environmental regulations.
  • New factory-installed options, including unit disconnect switch, powered or non-powered convenience outlet, and high short-circuit current rating (SCCR), eliminate the need and cost of third-party installation.

OdysseyTM Split Systems Now Available with Symbio Thermostat Control, Low-GWP Refrigerant

A cost-effective heating and cooling solution for situations when a rooftop unit is not feasible, OdysseyTM Split Systems include new features that help provide convenience and flexibility to help support decarbonization efforts. The systems have transitioned to low-GWP R-454B refrigerant and include factory-installed leak detection systems as required.

Odyssey Split Systems now come standard with Symbio thermostat control that has simplified wiring for easier and faster installation. Building stakeholders seeking to benefit from a building automation system (BAS) may choose to pair optional communication capabilities with the Symbio 700 controller as well.

VariTrane® Variable Air Volume Series Delivers Improved Acoustics

Trane has added design enhancements to the VariTrane® VAV Series fan-powered terminal unit to provide superior acoustics compared to its predecessor. Equipped with an improved suppressor integral attenuator, the units help reduce noise in occupied spaces at full- and part-load. This upgrade makes the units ideal for applications where acoustics are essential, including commercial real estate buildings, healthcare facilities, and K12 schools.

Commonly used in commercial buildings, these terminal units match heating, ventilation, and air conditioning supply to localized demand to provide passive humidity management, help improve indoor air quality, and deliver exceptional energy efficiency. Its pre-programmed, yet customizable, control sequences work in conjunction with Trane building automation systems to enhance VAV performance.
