Are You Prioritizing IAQ Efficiently?

April 22, 2021

Aircuity

The importance of indoor air quality (IAQ) has truly changed. IAQ is now seen as a critical factor in determining the overall health of your building and addressing the well-being of those who occupy it. Even prior to 2020, EPA studies of human exposure to air pollutants[i] indicated that indoor levels of pollutants may be two to five times higher than outdoor levels.

How can we address this critical indoor environmental quality (IEQ) factor – and do so efficiently from an energy use perspective? As part of its Wellsphere approach to building wellness, Trane recently joined forces with Aircuity to offer automated, data-based IAQ monitoring and management solutions for building owners.

When integrated with Trane controls, the Aircuity® system collects critical data about a building’s air and environmental quality. Using science-based standards, the system monitors and automatically adjusts air flow between indoors and outdoors, increasing ventilation when needed to optimize air quality. This airflow has been found to be key to reducing certain airborne pathogens and contaminants in occupied spaces. Automating the ventilation process can help users better manage energy efficiency.

Data generated by the Aircuity sensors are accessible 24/7 through an online dashboard, informing you if building IAQ issues need resolution. The system’s sensors gather air quality samples from inside and outdoors, which are sent to a sensor suite where the data is evaluated to assess and monitor air quality. This real-time information is coupled with trend analysis, giving you further insight.

The data provided and the knowledge that your building is automatically and efficiently responding to room air flow needs can give you greater peace of mind, as people return to schools, higher education campuses, office complexes, hotels, and other indoor environments.

There is evidence from ASHRAE® and other sources that HVAC technologies can mitigate the risk of exposure to infectious aerosols in built environments; however, the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and mitigation of COVID-19 in buildings is yet to be tested and confirmed.
